How heat affects car batteries in Dubai
Heat damages batteries slowly and invisibly. Here is what happens inside, and what you can do about it.
Ask any mechanic in the UAE and they will tell you the same thing: heat, not cold, is what kills car batteries here. The damage is slow and invisible, and it often shows up at an inconvenient moment.
What heat does inside a battery
A lead-acid car battery works through chemical reactions between lead plates and an acid electrolyte. Heat speeds those reactions up. That sounds useful, but it also speeds up the unwanted ones:
- Grid corrosion. The positive plate grids corrode faster at high temperatures, which permanently weakens the plates.
- Water loss. Flooded batteries lose water from the electrolyte, exposing the plates.
- Self-discharge. A hot battery loses charge faster while the car is parked.
None of this can be reversed. Each summer permanently takes away some of the battery’s capacity.
Why batteries fail after summer
Many drivers are surprised when their battery dies in October or on a cool winter morning rather than in August. The heat caused the damage. The failure shows up later, when the weakened battery has to deliver a strong start or has been standing for a while.
Under the bonnet is hotter than outside
On a summer afternoon, the engine bay of a car parked in direct sun gets much hotter than the air around it. After driving, engine heat adds to it. That is one reason some manufacturers put batteries in the boot or under a seat, and why heat shields around batteries matter.
How long do batteries last here?
There is no fixed number. It depends on the battery, the car, how it is driven and where it is parked. As a rough guide, many drivers in the UAE replace their battery every two to three years, which is often sooner than in cooler climates. A test is the only reliable way to know where yours stands.
Practical ways to extend battery life
- Park in the shade when you can. Covered or underground parking makes a real difference over a summer.
- Drive regularly. A car that sits for weeks loses charge, and a deeply discharged battery ages faster. If you travel for the summer, consider a maintenance charger or ask someone to drive the car.
- Avoid long idling with heavy loads. Idling with the AC on full, especially with accessories running, keeps the battery working without much charging.
- Keep terminals clean and tight. Corrosion increases resistance and makes the battery work harder.
- Fit the right technology. Cars with start-stop need EFB or AGM. See our guide to AGM vs EFB vs conventional batteries.
- Test before summer. If your battery is two or more years old, a battery test in spring tells you whether it will make it through.
Replace on your terms
If a test shows your battery is weak, you do not have to wait for it to strand you. A planned delivery and installation lets you replace it at home or at work, at a time that suits you.
