Car battery installation, registration and coding

Fitting a battery to a modern car is more than swapping two cables. We install it safely, keep the car’s memory, and register the battery with the car’s computer where required.

What is battery registration?

Many modern cars have an intelligent battery sensor and a battery management system. The car records the battery’s age and capacity and adjusts how it charges it.

When you fit a new battery, the car must be told. Otherwise it keeps charging the new battery as if it were the old, worn one. That can overcharge it, shorten its life and make start-stop behave strangely. Registration is done with a diagnostic tool and takes a few minutes.

Registration vs coding

The two terms are often confused. They are different jobs.

Aspect Registration Coding
When New battery of the same type and capacityBattery type or capacity changes
What changes Car resets its battery historyCar is told the new battery specification
Typical example AGM 80Ah replaced with AGM 80AhUpgrading from EFB to AGM, where permitted

Requirements vary by make, model and year. We check your specific car before fitting.

Our installation standard

  • Memory support

Power supported during the swap where the car allows, to keep settings and avoid fault codes.

  • Correct disconnection order

Negative off first and on last, which protects electronics and prevents short circuits.

  • Vent and hold-down

Vent tubes reconnected on boot- and cabin-mounted batteries; hold-down secured against vibration.

  • Terminal care

Terminals cleaned and tightened to the right torque.

  • Registration or coding

Performed with a diagnostic tool where the car needs it.

  • Post-fit checks

Charging voltage, start-stop and warning lights checked.

Already bought a battery?

We can install a battery you have bought yourself. Send us a photo of its label first so we can confirm it suits your car. If it does not, we will tell you before the visit.

Common DIY installation mistakes

  • Fitting a conventional battery in a car designed for AGM
  • Leaving the vent tube off a battery in the boot or under a seat
  • Skipping registration on cars with battery management
  • Over-tightening terminals and cracking the posts
  • Reversing the terminals, which can damage fuses and electronics

FAQ

Car Battery Installation: common questions

Does my car need battery registration?

Many BMW, MINI, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Volkswagen, Porsche and Land Rover models do, along with other cars that have start-stop and an intelligent battery sensor. Send us your car details and we will confirm.

What happens if I do not register the new battery?

The car may keep charging it as if it were the old battery. That can shorten its life and cause start-stop or electrical warnings.

Can I upgrade from EFB to AGM?

Often yes, and AGM handles heat and start-stop better. But the car may need to be coded for the new type. Going from AGM to EFB or conventional is not recommended.
